Childhood BubbleGum Ice Cream HOMEMADE (part 1 of 3)

This is part ONE of a THREE part series.  See part TWO and part THREE for the complete details.

Bubble gum ice cream tastes EXACTLY just like...hmmm....bubble gum!  It even feels wrong to swallow it, {smile}.   I remember summer days in my small town when my Grandma would take all the cousins out for ice cream on hot days.  We went to Jones Drug, a small town- storefront drugstore with a quaint ice cream shop at the back of the store.  I would skip past the isles of merchandise straight back to the ice cream shop and be instantly taken to a mini land just.for.kids.  There was a magic piano in the corner.  It would play songs and the keys would move BUT no one was there!  The piano boldly and playfully quipped through many songs, keys pounding and flying, making music, with an empty seat.  It was THE fascinating ice cream shop piano!  Good things happened at Jones Drug.  The walls had bright and happy posters.  One poster was entirely filled with rows of ice cream scoops in every flavor and color.  All the kids would chime in, declaring our favorite flavors and colors from the poster.  The poster read in bold, "I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream".  We would read that poster OUT LOUD every time we visited Jones Drug.  And of course, we would all laugh at it, finding it intriguing, as if it was the first time we'd ever read it!  At the ice cream shop, the booths would curve into giant C shapes and after we picked out our flavors, we would take our cones and slide around into the booths, feet dangling in our jelly shoes and legs swinging and little mouths licking circles around each cone as we giggled and chatted.

Well, my very favorite flavor was BUBBLE GUM.  I didn't really even like the taste BUT I adored the color of this ice cream! It was a bright turquoise blue and was loaded with colorful, round gum balls.  I was on a mission each time to remove all the gumballs and line them on my napkin.  I would collect a treasure full of fun gumballs.  One by one, I would pop them into my mouth, ready to blow giant bubbles! They each left colorful dots on my napkin afterwards.   I would tuck my newly made beautiful napkin into my pocket and save it as artwork and blow bubbles all the way home.

It wasn't until a few years later that I discovered chocolate chip COOKIE DOUGH ice cream and at that point, I left bubble gum ice cream for good.  Collecting balls of cookie dough tasted SO much better than those silly gumballs!  I still dig though ice cream, finding the treasures and saving them. I drove my husband mad when we first got married because I would pick the goodies out and leave the ice cream.  We solved the problem by buying HIS and HERS ice cream.

And now, years later, I re-created that old time, bubble gum ice cream! I even dyed the ice cream the same color that I remembered it being.  Oh yes, it still tastes like you're eating gum, but it has the rich and creamy taste of homemade ice cream!

The RECIPE:
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup canned milk
3/4 cup sugar (or 1 cup based on preference)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon bubble gum extract
1/4 teaspoon princess flavoring
food coloring in your color of choice

Stir until dissolved and pour into your ice cream maker and WHIP it up!
Add gumballs just a few minutes before ice cream in complete.

 One for me,

One for you,

Please hurry, it's melting!

Ice cream is CLASSIC and this girl loves classic! I have more ice cream ideas to give you a sweet, sweet summertime:

Also, bubble gum ice cream has fun NEON colors and we enjoyed this ice cream during a summer Neon party day.   I have some super fun ideas on how to use NEON in your small or not so small parties coming up on the blog tomorrow so check back then!

What are your childhood memories
of the classic ice cream cone?

Did you bite of the bottom of the cone?

Or just twirl the ice cream down from the top?

What is your all time favorite flavor?

I miss Jones Drug. My favorite thing about this project was that you passed one of our shared memories to our sons. I hope they treasure it as dearly as you and I do. :-)

What a blast from the past! I used to get bubble gum ice cream as a child too. And like you it was less for the flavor & more to collect all the gumballs to chew on afterwards. Visiting from Sunday Showcase :)

I haven't tried this recipe yet. Just wondering what 'princess flavouring' is and is and is it necessary?
Thanks.
