{Please Help} Spring Cleaning

Organizing I LOVE...
Decorating makes me happy...
but cleaning is always a nightmare.

I dislike it immensely. My super cool husband has hired house cleaners for me OFF AND ON throughout our marriage. Sadly, this is the OFF time. I used to think he did this for me because he loved me so much, but looking back it's possible he did it so he could exist in a peaceful and clean home. *wink* Who knows?

I will procrastinate on cleaning at every opportunity. But it's spring and the fresh air in the open windows is showing the clean beauty around us and now our home sweet home is begging for some fresh clean lovin'.

I need some ideas on how to remove hard water stains from glass shower doors. We already do the "squeegee-thing". I always manage to forget to squeegee the doors after each use, but my husband always remembers thankfully! So, the water is instantly removed 50% of the time.

I'm ready for your advice!
Because at this point I'm longing for
these GORGEOUS ruffle
Anthropologie shower curtains instead of the glass doors.

Regardless of whether my shower doors get cleaned or not,
I desperately NEED these curtains!

Or these work too...

Oops, once again.... I got sidetracked with decorating instead of cleaning. Please share your ideas on how to remove hard water stains from glass shower doors.

I have the CUTE and GIRLY cleaning gear!

I got these Gloveables last year.
They are sold in a variety of colors and are super fun.
Diva Housewife!

I found these colorful scrubbers at
the Target dollar section.

Anyone else a fan of Mrs. Meyers?
If you use any other unique or cute cleaning supplies, I would love to hear.
And, in addition to the hard water stain advice, ALL cleaning tips are welcome!

And once I get your advice,
I'm sure I will be motivated to clean...(??)

We have really hard water here in Las Vegas and our glass shower doors get awful looking real fast. My favorite cleaner is called Bring It On, removes tough water spots. You can order it online at www.bringitoncleaner.com

What's really great is it actually smells good, kind of minty! Unlike most lime, calcium, rust removers that have a scary chemical smell.

It's still not fun to clean the doors, but this product works really well for me.

Unfortunately I don't have and hard water advice because we don't have shower doors, but what I find works for me is a weekly cleaning schedule. Like Mondays I do the kitchen, Tuesdays the bathrooms, Wednesday the living rooms and Thursday the bedrooms, that way I don't have to clean the whole house in one day and then I just maintain the other rooms when it isn't their day.

I swear by vinegar and water. I don't know if it'll work on hard water stains, though. Maybe spray them, rub in some baking soda, and spray again. I also like to rub with scrunched up newspaper rather than sponges. Good luck!

Good luck with the doors...I haven't had much luck with mine... I too get distracted by decorating. LOVE the curtains. Check out www.urbanoutfitters.com for another ADORABLE ruffle shower curtain (LOTS CHEAPER) that comes in drapery panels too. I just got it and it is gorgeous! Good luck!

Best wishes,
Tammy

I had a friend that had a SUPER clean house. She would use toilet bowl cleaner to get rid of hard water stains on her outside windows. You could try it.

Our hard water has actually etched the shower doors. Pooh! I do keep a spray bottle of 50/50 vinegar and water in the shower to spray it down afterwards. It keeps the soap scum down.
As for spring cleaning,I wrote a blog post here: http://basketmasterweavings.blogspot.com/2010/03/what-your-feeling-about-spring-cleaning_12.html
It is in podcast form, episode #2. It tells how I do my spring cleaning, I don't do it! But I do something else instead.
Blessings,
Nancy

My motto is "I never met a chemical I didn't like." I'd head straight for the Lime Away.

After getting the doors clean apply a coat of car wax (inexpensive Minute wax will work). Between the wax and the squeegee your problem should be solved.

I thought of something else. My dad just got a new steam cleaner and loves it! I am thinking of getting one too. I guess it has different attachments on it so you can use them for cleaning things and for steaming your clothes. I really don't like to iron so a machine that helps clean and gets wrinkles out sounds good to me!

Other than Monica on "Friends", nobody likes cleaning. It's a drudgery, just like working out. I just turn on some music and get it over with. = P

Cool comments on this post. Makes me wish I had questions to ask just so I could get great advice! As far as your husband not getting you a house cleaner, pretty sure it's because he just spent all his extra dough on something...

Years ago, when our old home had glass doors with hard water deposits, here is how we cleaned them: We REMOVED them and replaced with a shower rod and pretty curtain!! (Don't know if you have the kind of standard tub that you can remove the doors...)

I was never sad about the loss of those doors!

No great suggestions but I love those shower curtains, especially the top, blue ones. Adorable!

"The Works" Toilet bowl cleaner works great on hard water stains Which reminds me that I need to get some as the windows in my sunroom have hard water stains due to the sprinklers!

We have horrible hard water here and the only thing I've found that will work is wear your rubber gloves get an old rag and wet and wring out apply straight lime away and rub all over rinse it off well then I clean with a vinegar alcohol glass cleaner. I think I will try the wax after I do this next time maybe the hard water will stay off longer! Good luck!!!

Have you tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser? That's what I use on our shower doors and I love it! Good luck!

Dorey said...

Ughh...Who likes cleaning? I wish I did! I was going to say Magic Erasers too! Not a lot of people know that you can use it on hard water but it works! :D

I also love the cleaner 'Kaboom' (but I kinda think they just changed the formula a little bit...lame) :/

We're the same with the on and off housekeeper thing. When I had some, they used CRV to get the water spots off the shower door. It works but it's harsh. I also like Bon Ami or Bar Keeper's Friend. They both work but with a little more elbow grease. Good luck!

I am obsessed with those cute cleaning gloves! They make cleaning so much more fun!
I try to use a Magic Eraser every few weeks to keep the stains from getting too bad. Those things are amazing!

In our duplex, I used a Magic Eraser after many failed attempts with cleaners. It worked SO much better! But it took us only two weeks before we took down the glass doors and put up a shower curtain, anyway (we just put them back when we moved out).

VINEGAR!!! it works WONDERS!!
I would fill a squirt bottle with vinegar water and spray with it when you squeegee. I don't have glass shower doors, but I do spray the shower after every shower with the Clean Shower sprays...they help keep hard water and other scum at bay!

Thanks for sharing and linking up to I'm Lovin'It! Have a FABULOUS weekend!

Here's a tip to clean your shower tiles...Use Dawn or another liquid dish washing solution. Wet a rag, drop several beads of Dawn on it and wash down the walls. For the base, I would recommend using a brush as water deposits often discolor the tiles. I did this several days ago and it took me no more than 10 minutes.

dear, if you love decorating then go ahead. leave the cleaning to your husband! hahaha *evil grin*
Although you can always hire a maid to do all of those chores. By the way, I love your ruffled curtains. It's very colorful and has a lot of attitude. As much as I am loving your curtains, it is much more practical to have a glass shower screens so that you won't be doing the laundry and cleaning the shower cloth from time to time :)
