Our family's annual LAKE POWELL HOUSEBOAT vacation, part 1

This is part 1 of a two part blog series.  Please see here for part 2.

I'm a lover of traditions.  I'm sure you all kinda guessed that by now!   Our annual houseboat tradition on Lake Powell is our favorite!  Of all the things we get to see and experience in this beautiful little life, our entire family agrees that this is the best!  It's the cream of the crop, top dog, grand finale to our family fun.

Lake Powell is our home.  Chris and I were both born and raised with the lake in our backyard.  I grew up camping and boating on Lake Powell almost every weekend of our summers.  This incredible and unique place has my heart in a really big way.   This giant space of fresh blue water, with it's awe-inspiring red canyon cliffs always centers my spirit, renews my mind, and covers me with calm.  Chris and I are so happy that we can take our boys back to Lake Powell each year, so they can get a taste of who we are, where we came from, and what we identify with.

All traditions are a sheet of music.  They follow the same song, repeating the happy melody over and over again.  Our Lake Powell tradition is full of repeated fun, with surprises of new activity added in each year.

We ALWAYS stop for milk shakes and burgers on our way to Powell.  We all anticipate the break on our drive, counting the miles, and jumping out of the car, as we finalize milk shake flavors in our head!

We are HERE!!

We always kick off our vacation with dinner at the marina.  There really is no place I'd rather be.

Every place I go, I run.   It's been such a fulfilling goal this year!  Coming HOME to run is my favorite!

The docks always carry their own atmosphere that is light, airy, and festive.   We rush around getting our home loaded onto the big houseboat before we launch.

Let's float away...

Getting behind this big wheel and waiting to see where this year's adventure will take us!

...and this is the non stop beauty our eyes take in the entire vacation.
Lake Powell is entirely unique.  There is no place like it.

We brought our jet skis with us this year!  If you've never been on a jet ski...ummm, you really need to!

Me!
Chris!
We rode from sun up to sun down.

Cameron earned his Utah State PWC rider's license this year so he had a lot of fun operating the jet skis too!

PS  Cameron is just the cutest little teenager EVER.

Super cool shot of Cameron tearing it up on the jet ski!

On our boat ride, we found our secret slit rock that we discovered a few years ago.  You can read this story here.  If you climb all the way up this slit, the canyon opens up into a sandy path, way up high, wedged in between the canyon walls.  It is serene, quiet, and mysterious.  Then you jump back down into the water.  It is quite the adventure!

Kotah and I jump!

Kotah jumps!

Titus jumps!

And then back in the boat to continue our excursion.  The boys get to practice driving a lot on this trip.

The guys always play kickback music for us while we float.  It's a favorite of mine!

The houseboat slide is always a favorite too!

The boys did it over and over again!

Late afternoon, we found a camp spot, with our little water home nestled in between sandstone walls.

Time to drop the anchors and make a home on the beach.

We do a lot of exploring on our LP vacations.  These sandstone hills are the perfect places to run and explore.

Discovering a deep hole in the ground.

Our friends exploring the hole.

Over every red hill is sudden peace and beauty.

The girls all get together before our trip to plan our menu.  We can't find new restaurants on yelp for THIS vacation, so we pack our food in and cook on our houseboat home!

Food and freetime makes all our days happy ones!

Steak dinners...

Our friend, Hans, makes legendary beer can potatoes every year!
Camp food is above the rest!

I always bring a collection of homemade snacks...

The lake quiets down when the sun starts to leave in the evening.
The loud summer fun water turns over to a calming, natural peaceful wonderland.

It's the perfect time for fishing.
Titus is hooked on this patient leisure fun.

Day is nearly done and we lie under the stars
ready to start it all again the next day.

Doing Things PART THREE: Jumping into the Sky, bucket list check!

Ok,  I am ALMOST caught up with the blog posts I'm behind on, thank goodness.  My eyes are blurry and I want to escape outside for a bit! :)

This is a part 3 of a three part blog series.

See here for part 1, girls getaway in Denver, and
here for part 2, running up Vail Summit

Chris surprised me with sky diving tickets a lonnnnng time ago.  My entire life I had always thought that I wanted to sky dive but when presented with the tickets, I froze. Everything in me suddenly didn't want to skydive anymore.  I think the reason why I thought I had wanted to try it is because I love to live BIG, always wanting to DO things.   I desire to make the most memorable use of every minute.  I've always been that way. I want an entire collection of experiences.  Sky Diving felt like the top dog, the king of all experiences, the classic event on the bucket list.  So I was all in! ....until I actually had a ticket in my hand.

It took me two years to work up the courage to use this ticket.  I listed the tickets for sale on Craig's List, then removed the listing, I went back and forth, back and forth, until one afternoon, I had one of those serious little talks with myself and I decided to just do it, that I wasn't allowed to back down, and that wold be my final answer.

Worry and fear have always been my biggest struggle.  They ride on my back constantly.   I am working hard to overcome this, but it is a real struggle.  Fear builds walls around the big life that I want to live.  Those walls dictate my life and I don't want them to be in charge anymore.  In an effort to fight my fears, I made a choice to push forward with the sky dive jump.  I was ready to battle the exaggerated worry that my mind often entertains.  I need to knock down the walls of worry, releasing the power it has in my life.

Obviously one event, one day, one jump doesn't magically fix my issues.  However, it does give me more strength to push forward and to overcome this battle.  I felt absolute elation after making the decision to sky dive, and then following through!  You have no.idea.in.the.world. how afraid I was of this jump!  But once I found freedom in the air, I experienced one of the greatest feelings of my life.   This elated feeling stayed with me for days!   I suppose that is what happens anytime we push beyond and anytime we break through the negative things that bind us down.

Joy. Freedom.Excitement.

For my first sky dive jump, we drove to Moab, Utah, the Disneyland of outdoor recreation.  It is gorgeous there!  The plane ride up was a bonus scenic air tour!  My very dear friend, Kristen, came along for her first jump too.  Kristen was the PERFECT person to have with me.  I trust her fully.  She makes me feel relaxed and comfortable.  Kristen is also the one who raced with me when I ran my first half marathon!  This is just the sort of thing I want to be with her during.

Here is the video of my JUMP!
And below the video is a collection of photos.

Getting lessons on how to jump out of a plane!

Gearing up to go...

Ok, let's do this!

The plane is SO small!  We sat on the floor.

Going up for our scenic air tour!

The second the airplane door opened, my heart fell to my stomach.

JUMP!
Ohh emma gee

The freefall was so fast!
Then the parachute opened in a quick minute.

My skydiving experience was an unlikely mix of terror and peace.  All my nervous emotion and tense fear quickly collided with astonishing peace when the parachute opened in the wide open sky, with not a person around nor a sound heard.  The expansive views of blue sky and the ruggedly beautiful terrain of Moab swept peace throughout my body, mixing right in with the fear and adrenaline.  I've never knew a feeling like this existed.   And I will remember this day for the rest of my life.

Me!

Kristen!

We did it!
I am so thankful to have this girl in my life.
We have a big handful of other things we hope to experience together too!

All four of my most-loved boys were waiting for me on the ground!
Thank you Chris for providing this once in a lifetime experience for me.

Afterwards, we went out for frozen yogurt to celebrate...

We celebrate overcoming the fears the hold us back in life,
We celebrate the opportunity to live big,
We celebrate the beauty that surrounds us,
the experiences that grow us,
the memories that ground us,
the friendships that unite us,
and we celebrate
the excitement that powers us.
