Drop it Like it's Hot

By the way, I believe Coke wins...

...I really need to drop my sugary union with Coke. It's a terrible and bad habit,
yes I know this.

It also doesn't help with weight issues as I talked about HERE. I have a terrible battle with weight. However, sometimes I don't "battle" it, I do foolish things like drink soda pop instead of fighting the numbers on the scale. Why do we do these things?

I've dropped coke 2 other times:
-back when I was mountain bike racing I never drank any soda pop (not one sip).

-after I had Titus I made a choice to not drink soda pop for a year. I did it, not even one sip...then 2 days after 365 days had passed, I bought a coke (that wasn't smart obviously).

3rd times a charm??

Any motivation you can send my way?
Why do you think that it is so difficult to get rid of bad habits when you know they're harmful? I am very open to all advice and tips, thank you!

Just help this desperate girl get healthy and pretty!

I want to be all about the H2O. Tell me your favorite bottled water. Why?

We have an e-Spring filter and drink water from the tap that goes through the filter. IT's yummy.

Im kinda a water snob since that is all I drink besides tea....so the only water I will drink is Fiji, Voss, or sometimes Smart Water

i think bottled water is a scam--it's mostly purified tap water!

i carry a stainless steel water bottle with me, and that keeps me from reaching for other stuff, spending money, and dealing with wasteful packaging.

good luck kicking the habit--third time's the charm!

I am soooooo a smart water and fiji fan!! It was the funniest thing, I am generally slightly picky about water but during my pregnancy it was 10 times worse.

I've found that it's MUCH easier to drink water if I mix it with a fruit flavored drink mix like crystal light. it keeps me away from the soda and drinking more water (just a little bit tastier ;D). There are lots and lots of flavor packets that are 5 calories or less.

I have been told by two physicians now to slow down on my water intake. I drink a gallon (did) or more a day. Water is great for you though, much better than soda. You should look up and read all of the things that coke can clean and what it's doing to your insides...it's terrible for your bones too.

I drink Nestle water...I sip on a bottle all day and have one diet soda with dinner.......maybe you could just cut back for a bit.

Sorry I'm not much help.....

GO GREEN!! try not to do the plastic bottle thing... so wasteful. We do Nalgene bottles that are BPA free and have a filter and I think it tastes great!!
I like to put lemon slices in it now and then and it is very refreshing- especially with the summer months coming up. Giving up soda is one of the BEST things you can do- food is better anyway. Spend those calories on things that POWER you. I try to think about food as energy (enjoyable energy)
What will give me the biggest bang for my buck?
just a thought. :o)

I guess i should be glad I really don't care for soda at all, but if I do have one, I have diet. I actually HATE the taste of the non-diet ones -- like drinking syrup. :)

Bottled waters -- I love Pelligrino! Fizzy and fills me up more, plus, it's just fun and I love the bottles!
(Sure, now THERE'S a good reason to drink it...). :)

Good luck with your goal -- but remember... you're more than just what you take in, you're a wonderful person as a WHOLE.

Love ya!!

I dont drink bottled water, but from the tap.
I add lime, lemon, or cucumber slices to it (Cuc sounds gross, but is actually very refreshing-). I MAKE myself drink water-

We don't buy bottled water - we buy Spring water in the large water cooler bottles and refill our reusable metal bottles to take with us.

Dasani is nothing more than tap water.

Cathy said...

I quit coke years ago. Yes, I still indulge every now and then but two things really helped.

I splurge on a few bottles of pelligrino, sometimes you need a few bubble.

I flavor my brita filtered water, with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime or a dash,(just a little one) of fruit juice.

Ben has been trying to quit Coke for years. It's getting so bad, that he gets headaches when he skips a day. You'll have to let us know your secret when you discover it. :)

Melissa Miller said...

You can do it Lisa!!! You did it before and you know it can be done again. Just have many other choices of your favrite drinks available at all times in the fridge. You won't even miss it.

We don't drink bottled water. We have a Brita water pitcher and we use it constantly. I also drink Crystal Light lemonades and tea, hot teas, vanilla coffee, grape and orange juices.

I am at 44 pounds lost as of today. Woohoo! I don't even miss the soft drinks or sugar at all anymore. I have just just a little more weight to go. We are going to eat the healthy way the rest of our lives. This feels so great!

Instead of thinking of Coke as yummy and refreshing, think of it as syrupy, brown, sludge. That is what has helped me give up soda in the past. Good luck!!

Mom2fur said...

Lisa's comment about sludge is funny, but pretty good! I remember telling myself some favorite food (I forgot--we're talking decades ago) had something really disgusting in it and couldn't eat it for a long time. Really, imagine the makers of Coke grinding up the most horrible thing you can think of (like baby monkeys*) and maybe that will help. Really, do you want to drink baby monkeys? (Or is that monkies? Or Monkees?)
Now, water. I drink tap water because we live in an area (Long Island) where the water is superior. Seriously, my water district wins all kinds of awards. For your own area, the big trick is that it has to be ice cold. If you get a plastic water bottle, put it in the freezer. But before it freezes solid, take it out and 'squish' the bottle. You will get nice ice crystals all through the water and it will be so irresistable you will wonder why you ever wanted to drink Coke (with or without squished baby monkeys.)
*I admit my weirdness--at my age of 54, I'm entitled. Or maybe it's something in our water...
Good luck!

My favorite water flows from a SIG bottle. It's cold, the taste is consistent, it's easy to keep available, and the set size makes tracking H2O intake easy.

I love what Abby said about getting the most energy for your calorie. It's even applicable for a mesomorph trying to gain lean mass... There is only so much one anyone can eat in a day. Why not make the most of it in a positive way?

What is it you enjoy about coke? It is the taste, the caffeine, or just the little reprieve from a busy schedule? Depending on your answer maybe water isn't the best solution. Perhaps an Izzy a day would keep the cola away?

The Saved Quarter said...

I agree with the posters suggesting to get a reusable bottle and use tap water with a filter. So much better environmentally, and not much different as to what's in it.

Consider the environmental cost of transporting water from Fiji to your house, the thousands of miles of gas that are used, the exhaust going into the atmosphere, just for something available in your own home.

'Becca said...

Switching to tap water instead of bottled water will save you money compared to Coke, as well as being better for your health (did you know the safety standards for bottled water are lower than tap water?) and the environment. I like to keep a bottle of lemon juice in the fridge door and put a few drops in my glass of water. It adds flavor and a little Vitamin C with hardly any calories.

Another option is iced tea or herbal tea. I love red tea a/k/a rooibos. It tastes great and has antioxidants and no caffeine.

Here's some important information about Fiji Water.

Edward has cut way back on the amount of coke he drinks, and one thing that really helped is Pellegrino water in the glass bottles, sometimes it's just the fizz that he craves, and after a few sips of sparkling mineral water that craving goes away! Good luck!

I have a friend that lost 50 lbs just by switching from Mt Dew to Diet Mt Dew. My husband also lost about 15 pounds by switching to diet. I don't drink bottled water as I like to use tap which ours is filtered.

I needed to read all those suggestions as I am SO trying to leave the diet cokes behind...Not easy

Okay, well I totally think you should drop it for a whole load of reasons but I also dont think you need to give it up totally. Just replace it 90% of the time and indulge once a week or so. That way you lose the addicted feeling but don't feel like its all or nothing.

Try adding fruit to a big pitcher of water and not just lemon - Berries, cucumber, oranges, limes etc.

As for bottled, I like FIJI and I also kick up my day with a Spark for a healthy way to add a big kick of energy.

You can do it!

Dr. Pepper is the best!

I use a Sigg and a Brita to avoid buying bottled water.

Cindy said...

I have the same issues except with Diet Mt. Dew. I just told myself no more. It is so bad for me. We also just purchased a Pur water container with a spout that holds 18 cups. Trying to drink more water. Good Luck.

Good for you for trying to kick the habit; that's the first step, right?
And I think Nestle is our water bottle of choice because it's the cheapest at Sam's. I'm all kinds of complicated, aren't I?
I have kicked sodas {or Cokes- they're all called that in AL} many times and mainly it's a mental thing, for me. Also, if they aren't in the house, then that makes the decision a lot easier.
Sadly, I could never get Chic-fil-A to stop carrying them. :)
Good luck!! You can do it!

Evain is my ALL time favorite water! I love it..I can drink it ice cold, luke warm or hot and it tastes great always! Good luck Lis.

This sounds silly but water is my favorite drink!

Tammy @ tinselshop.com said...

I know how hard this is. I am battling a diet Mt. Dew problem right now... I love our filtered water from the fridge but when I drink bottled I just discovered FIJI. The water is fine but for some reason I drink it faster so I drink more. Maybe it is the square bottle or the soft plastic and I squeeze it more or something... Try mixing a packet of splenda and a little lemon. My father-in-law taught me that and it is yummy. Also like Smart Water and Zephyrhills. Good luck!

Best wishes,
Tammy

get a Brita, I use to be a huge pop drinker but a friend got me drinking water now I love it and pop is just a treat almost too sweet now

I was able to kick my diet coke habit several years ago...but my coffee habit is going strong. Sigh.

sarahgrace said...

I don't know if anyone said it here ( I had to browse through the comments...) but I heard that drinking a pop actually lowers your immune system by quite a bit for several hours- so I always think of that when I want to drink one.
I'm also a Smart Water fan, just because I think it tastes the best and like that it has electrolytes in it. However, I usually have Nestle on hand (for car trips, etc.) because it's a whole lot cheaper and still tastes pretty good. (I try to be more "green" but sometimes it's just easier to go the other way... terrible excuse, I know.)

Kristen said...

I gave up drinking soda several years ago, now I'm hooked on vanilla lattes =)

It's going to take time, my suggestion, don't quit cold turkey, baby steps. Try switching to Diet Rite, it's caffeine and calorie-free made with Splenda instead of aspartame.

I like to spice up my plain old drinking water, I add slices of lemons and limes or you can add mint leaves or even add cucumber for a refreshing taste.

Hope this helps! Good luck, you're doing great!

I am suffering from the same affliction! COKE! I have one a day and it's horrible. The funny thing is that I don't even feel good after I've had it...so why have it? I should do the 365 day thing!

Jessica Loukota Leimback said...

I think it is about the cup and straw. If you put your ice water in a cup that you usually would have a coke in and that fun straw...you won't notice so much of what you are drinking but how you are drinking it! I love plastic cups, lids and straws even if it is H20.
