Joy, Joy, Merry, Merry 2012

Our holiday lit home sweet home!

Joy to the world! The Lord is come:
let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room
and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns:
let men their songs employ
while fields and floods rocks hills and plains
repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow
nor thorns infest the ground:
He comes to make his blessings flow
far as the curse is found.

He rules the earth with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of his righteousness
and wonders of His love.

For a Christmas Day CHEERS, try splashing steaming hot cocoa over a scoop of peppermint ice cream, served in stemware...of course.

Have the merriest of Christmases, 2012.
With love and blessings,

Cookie Tree Forest and Christmas Cookie Resource

Crunches cookie bites, crumbs, counters of spilled flour, stacks of sugared treats, it must be December!

For the kids' school Christmas party this year I found adorable snowball tree cookies from Better Homes & Garden's website.  The full recipe is there if you're interested.

Rolling 360 tiny snowballs was a bit tedious BUT I had Cameron helping and chatting with me the entire time so we had some precious moments mixed in with impatiently wishing we were finished!

Rows and rows of dough balls...

These trees are ready for garland and ornaments!

And soon we had a little cookie forest!

Ready to be plated up and delivered to an energetic group of happy school kids...

The next batch of NEW cookies I tried this year were these delicious sounding French Sables I found on my always favorite, Pen N Paper Flowers Blog.  She has the recipe there too!

These are classic jam cookies with a baked streusel on top.  Total YUM.  Not too sweet, but just right.

These cookies are baked in muffin tins.

Those are the only new cookies I tried this season!  Outside of that, I'm baking my kids' requested family favorites.  The SAME ones I bake every year.  You know the ones.  I'm sure you each have those traditional family cookies too.  I always love hearing the variety of everyone's favorites!

Our traditionals include, maple frosties, cream cheese sugars, ribbon cookies, chocolate crinkles, snickerdoodles, and maybe more.  ;)

Christmas cookies are perfectly paired with Christmas books!  Grab a cookie (or three) and cozy down with a holiday story.

Two timeless traditions.

And since we can't possibly eat all this sugar goodness, we jar, plate, or box some up to share with those we love.

These adorable jar labels are handmade by Mud & Twig on etsy.  Check back for a special discount code to use at the beginning of the new year for your own jar labels.

I may have written a blog post (or a few!) before about Christmas cookies.  It's easy to see where my heart is friends.  ;)  I've included the archives below for your happy cookie hunting.

Grandpa gave me the MAGIC and also a FULL resource of Christmas IDEAS and MENUS

It's almost here!  The most anticipated little-big day of the year!

I've always been a Christmas girl at heart.  Naturally.  My Grandpa (who recently passed away this year) was also a big-time Christmas lover!  I think it was contagious and I caught his infectious love for the season when I was only two! I have a mental book of memories with my Grandpa at Christmas.  He had this joy bursting forth, especially during the holidays.  He knew the right tones to use, the right things to say, and the right expressions to make to cause our little eyes to widen with wonder.  Like a charm, every year, he pumped us up with expectant enthusiasm.  He literally carried the magic of Christmas on his toes!

I was captured by the magic and have been ever since.  I carry it with me and when the calendar hits December I may rush a little lot more and my house may get a bit messier and I may be stressing out about over-booked days, BUT in and out and beneath all of that rush, my heart beats faster and I just can't stop smiling inside.  I am crazy about the touching Christmas stories of hope, the glowing lights, the smells of evergreens mixed with gingerbread, baking batches and batches of beautiful cookies, and BOTH the giving and receiving of gifts!

"We can hardly stand to wait,
please Christmas don't be late!"

Our dining room chalkboard

Every year, we hang photos of a collection
of some of our first Christmas trees

I love Jesus, and I'm His girl but I don't make big efforts to draw focus away from "commercialized Christmas" in order to better praise Him.  My heart rejoices in the Nativity AND my heart is giddy with all the holiday "to dos".  I can celebrate Jesus every day and still embrace the 25th of December.

My boys are extra excited during these December days too!  To embrace the season, I've given them a new holiday book nearly every year with a signed note inside, sharing the lesson and moral of the Christmas story within the pages.  This year, we are keeping our holiday book collection in this wagon for easy grab n read access!

Then they could find a cozy spot and get lost in holiday wonderland.

We spend the days that I'm not checking off my TO DO list, doing exciting holiday activities together like making gumdrop snowflakes, gingerbread star trees, or a long string of pom pom snowball garland.  I weave a tiny bit of learning into our activities   When we made the snowball pom poms, we read the history of snowflakes discovered.

For Christmas activities, shop downtown and see all the beautiful store fronts, pile in the car to look at lights, or bundle up and find a one horse open sleigh!  Our family enjoyed that experience last season and it was dreamy!

And as the days draw closer my Mom and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen being homemaker girls as we prepare for our feast!  If you want some menu ideas, here you go! :)

and another one!

Oh...And don't forget to find some mistletoe to hang!

I know you're all busy making merry,
Happy December!

Elf-Made Stocking Gift Ideas and Striped Jammies for Christmas Eve

For stockings I like to stay far away from all things commercialized and focus on the beauty of handmade goodness.  I feel it adds more magic to a clumpy, overfilled stocking when the gifts within look as if they've been carefully made my little elves in long shoes with tall hats instead of picked up off a store shelf.

Here are some ideas!

Santa left these beautiful wooden Japanese spin tops in our boys' stockings last year.
They provided the magic of being carefully crafted by little elves.

found at Spartan Shop

These adorable Hot Wheel roll ups also made it into the 2 younger boys stockings last year.  They're a fun and easy way to transport Hot Wheels when little ones need to ever-so-patiently wait for their Mama when out running errands.

Once again, they have that special hand made by elves look!

On a couple occasion, Santa has left wooden whistles in the boys' stockings.  When we lived up in the mountains, Santa brought bark covered wooden whistles.  The boys also have wooden whistles from another Christmas, like the one pictured below.

You can find these whistles at a lot of tourist-type gift shops while on vacation.

photo source (but not where we found ours)

Santa is also leaving critter felt ornaments!  Again, magically made by lil elves.  ;)

Other ELF MADE stocking stuffer ideas:

- Remember the wooden tree swing we gave the boys to celebrate a classic summer?  That company also sells adorable make your own toy kits.

- and wooden toys, like slingshots

- marbles (remove wrapping and tie up in a canvas bag)

- for stocking candy, visit a candy store for vintage type candy. Salt water taffy is a great choice!

- check local craft fairs and etsy of course!

My two older boys have intricately handmade stockings.  They are one of my favorite possessions.  I treasure them.  They are accompanied by a beautiful story so every time I pull them out of the Christmas decor box, my heart overflows.  To read about that story see post here:  The Stockings of Kindess.

Next up...Christmas Eve Traditions!

We have many holiday traditions in our home, many.  Giving the boys stuffed animals and pajamas on the Night Before Christmas is one of them.  You do that too, right?  ;)

Making the animals extra special for an extra special night pumps up the magic.  Here are some ideas for stuffed animal gifts:

1) Strings Attached Gift
This year we are giving Beanie Ballz and I am wrapping them up like a giant ornament.  We will make a game out of it.  I'll tie a long piece of yarn to the gift and hide it, stringing the yarn in a maze with a nametag on the end of the yarn.  It's a gift "with strings attached".  On the big ready.set.go. the boys will find the string of yarn with their names and weave around until they find the other side with the wrapped ball gift to open.

2) Adding Knits to Stuffed Animals
Last year my Mom knit tiny scarves to little penguins.

3) PET KITS
Another year, I made little "pet kits".  I bought some lined baskets on clearance at Michaels.  I also bought little plastic dog dishes.  I made round, foam name tags, named each dog, and also added their pet's name to each dish.

Next, all about the cozy soft jammies!
I think striped jammies on Christmas Eve are perfect!

Other striped jammies I adore:

Polarn O. Pyret has everything cute and striped

Sometimes J Crew has cute striped jammies for kids too!

I really ( a lot!!) wanted to get these slippers for my kids but they don't sell the right sizes.  I am crazy over them.  And paired with striped long johns would be simply Christmas-y.

More holiday prep fun stuff coming up tomorrow!
