Welcome to 13, Teenager: a letter to my new teen

Dear Cameron,

For the next seven years,  "teen" will be added to the end of your age.  You have walked over the bridge of time from a child to a teenager.  You are 13!  These years will be unlike any other set of years you've experienced this far!

These years are vital to personal growth, tender yet rough, painful yet beautiful.  This is the time you will transform within from a child's outlook into an adult's perspective.  You may feel confused and awkward some days because you are straddling both worlds during this brief period.  That's okay.   Each day you're learning to see life through new windows and you will eventually shoot up, to the sky, fully ready to grasp your ambitions.  Some days you'll feel mature and other days you'll feel like a vulnerable kid.  This is because you are between two life stages.  Growing takes energy but is always worth it.  You'll be tired a lot, but that's okay.  Be gentle with yourself and always gentle with others.  We are all on a journey together.

Don't feel pressured to be like somebody else.  It is a futile quest that will leave you unfulfilled and insecure.  When I was a teenager, I thought it was a fun challenge to be as different as possible as the mainstream "cool", and that independence made me very happy and confident.  It really works!  Also, never let other people influence, dictate, or determine WHO you are.  You were created with a signature-stamped blueprint of "the real you".  No one else will have this special inside knowledge to tell you who you need to be.  However, sometimes your mind may turn circles as you actually struggle with wondering who you are!  Guess what?  That's okay.  It's all within, waiting to be discovered.  I am an adult, and I still learn new things about myself every day as I continue to learn who I am.  But it is a gift, waiting to be revealed to me as I falter and stumble along in life.  God knows who I am and I know too, day by day.  This will all be true for you too.  So don't stress too much when you feel lost and frustrated.  It's okay.

Cameron, always use courage in this journey.  Carry courage within your soul to make a difference, to stand your ground, and to wage your battles.  Some days you'll feel weak and you'll wonder why you mess up and make so many mistakes.  That's okay.  You're going to mess up.  I mess up all the time.  But we carry on, we just do.  If you're down, let me know or let someone know.  We can all stand back up and carry forward together. It's okay.  Never let your spirit linger on your failures.  Accept the failures as lessons and push ahead.   Shine bright.  We are each given unique purposes.  However, one purpose humankind shares is to shine bright.  Remember to be excited about your successes and to share your gifts.   Celebrate the gifts that other's put out into this little-big world too.

Above all, know that I am here for you.  You have my heart, unconditionally.  I hope you use prayer and wisdom in your choices, but I will be here regardless, shining bright, celebrating you.

Love,
Mama

Cameron, is the BEST running partner! And when we were finished, leaning on each other's shoulders, he figured out how to make a heart shape with our arm shadows!

I gave Cameron a special gift on his birthday: a small journal.  The purpose of this journal is to encourage goals and personal growth.  A teenager is the ideal time to start smart habits and to recognize full potential.  I wrote some thought-provoking questions in it to kick it off.  Then I explained that throughout these years, whenever he wants new nuggets of wisdom or more thought-provoking questions to think about, he could hand me the journal and I'll write more in it for him to fill out.  I hope it blesses him as he is propelled forward in his future.

I am also giving him this book to read: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.  I read it as a teenager and it was an awesome resource for me!

Happy
13th
Birthday
Cameron!

Check back tomorrow for his party details!

Finally Fall Home Decor 2013 and our basket-making night!

October straight through December is my FAVORITE time of the year EVER!  ...but for all of you long-time readers, you already know that.  :)

yes, I wrote on a LEAF. ;)

When the air shifts, breezing crunching leaves to the ground,  and the earth turns 50 shades of gold, and hot tea warms my fingers, and the fireplace showers cozy warmth over our home sweet home, these are the days that provide the most comfort to my spirit.

Lit candles are reserved only for the chilly, cuddly months!

Hot tea is a must for this girl

When fall begins, our house switches from open sun windows, sticky popcicle floors, wet footprints, and happy loud shouts to cuddly blankets and books, snuggled sits by the fire, and hot cocoa mess on the counters.  The transition of the loud, excited, freedom-buzzing months of summer to the calm, orderly, inside warmth of fall days creates a silent magic in our lives.

Quiet hints of the season

These cozy months are the times where our house feels MOST like a HOME.

Family dinners...
when we can!
Homemade butternut squash soup
with apple dumplings.

Welcome to our autumn home 2013!
I always leave a new message on our family chalkboard to welcome the season.

This unique locally-made basket is woven on an antique pastry blender!

I have been very intrigued with our local basket shop on main street for awhile.  The owner weaves hundreds of baskets in her shop.  Her work is beautiful!  My sweet friend and I took a basket making class one recent (and cozy!) fall night.   We had great fun, although I am not the best basket-maker girl.

We did, however, complete our baskets in one class!  It was very satisfying. Our baskets were appropriate for fall, stained in a pumpkin color.

My new apple basket...made by ME!
YAY

I've already used some of these apples for delicious apple-baking!

For more festive fall, I brought some colors of happy into our home.

I hunted for pumpkins with the most personality: curly and rebellious stems with plump bodies.
Then I masked off the base and painted the stems.

I used my leftover paint to paint patches on burlap.
Then I framed the burlap and attached a pressed leaf to it.

I used a paint pen to write: "You're my pumpkin".

Unique is cool.
Remember that! ;)

As I pulled our fall box out of the garage this year, Titus gave one of his heart-grabbing smiles and said in (AGAIN), his heart-grabbing voice, "Ohhh, I love how you decorate for the seasons Mama!".

And.
THAT.
is all I needed to energize my hands as I transformed our space.
A silent whisper inside said,

"Keep on, keeping on
with these little things.
They notice."

LAKE POWELL vaction PART 2: Playful Peace under the Sun and Stars

This is a two part blog post.  Please see PART 1 for the beginning

We officially have a sumer tradition of coming HOME on a houseboat to incredible Lake Powell at the end of summer.  Chris and I were born and raised on the shores of this lake and it has our whole hearts.  Coming home to this place fills our gaps and puts absolute peace in our souls.

Being on the lake connects our hearts like a lil puzzle.  Our story starts here and this trip always binds us,  pulling us to center.

I was also able to check something off my wishlist on this vacation!  I have wanted to try stand up paddleboarding for awhile.  However, I passed up a couple opportunities to do it because I wanted my first time to be someone breathtakingly beautiful.  Lake Powell was the ideal fit.  This was my complete highlight of the vacation!!

The sun fall's warm colors splashed on the water, encircling my spirit with solace.

Cameron was able to do a sunset paddleboard ride also!

Lake Powell is a place like no other.  True story.  Powerful canyon walls that stretch straight to the sky.  Clean, clear water that fills the red canyons.  It is the original minimalist design, straight from nature.

Lake Powell holds beautiful secrets around each bend, waiting to be discovered...

Like perfectly-formed holes in rocks, bridges, and waterfalls.

Discovering this waterfall was a vacation highlight.  Hans, our host and driver, navigated our big boat through tight canyon spaces, winding our way back through the quiet waters.  At the very end, the waterfall treasure was waiting for us.

Surprise!

So much to see!  We spent a lot of time riding smoothly on top of the boat, pushing every single gorgeous sight we could spy into our minds.

Lake Powell is the most peaceful place on earth.  It just is.

And Titus has always been called our peaceful boy.  He is being silly here but he really does bring peace wherever he goes!

PEACE was the constant theme of our time away.  One of the BEST things about staying on a houseboat is dragging beds upstairs and sleeping under the bare night, under the open stars.  It is glorious.  And it is something I'll hold with me for the rest of my life.

Chris setting up our bed for our night under the stars.

We spent much time relaxing under the sun as well as the stars!

Kotah and I were lying on chairs together as the boat made its way uplake.  I turned to see him in this adorable position. :)

Kickback,
relax.
Soak in the art,
nature's modern art.

Beautiful

sun.

My middle one,
Kotah

Titus,
my youngest

My oldest,
Cameron Skyler

I love them.
tons.

And I am pretty darn crazy about this guy too!
He's my other big favorite.

If I could pick anywhere
in this great big-little world
to escape
for spirit renewal
and peaceful pour overs,
it would be
Lake Powell,
our heart's home.
