This is part ONE of a TWO part post. To see part two of this post visit: Our Majestic Mountainside Fall Picnic.
A few years ago, when we first moved to Colorado, we met a family who owned a beautiful apple orchard in the Colorado farmland. The farm had been in their family for generations. Their farmhouse and land were simply lovely. They hosted a festive and fun apple party with long tables of fall food, hay rides, and a chance for everyone to pick their own apples. I'm from the Arizona desert and was new to this traditional country lovin recreation. It was such an exciting experience! Our boys were toddlers and babies so we had to lift them high into the tree branches to pick their sweet red apples. That apple orchard party was a perfect celebration of autumn.
Fast forward to today. Our boys are tall enough to reach the branches and I still get giddy about fall in Colorado. We didn't have school on one fall-sunshine day in early October so I spontaneously loaded up my boys and headed to Cedaredge, CO, for an apple picking day. Cedaredge is known for their incredible apples!
We stopped along the roadside for fresh apple cider and to photograph the Colorado highways.
Then we discovered a truly charming old farmhouse along the backroads of Cedaredge, Uncle Johnny's U-Pick Farm. It was a genuine -REAL DEAL- orchard and farm operation. It's personal and non commercialized. Our kind farmer friend farms his land and has all types of delicious fresh goodness!

We eagerly arrived and were ready to start our treasure hunt for farm fresh apples!
There is magic in the simplicity of the outdoors, spending time doing something that nourishes us in the most pure way.
Weaving in and out of perfectly lined trees in a row...
On a treasure hunt for sweet goodness...
Tip toe-ing to secure the best selections...
Breathing in the scents of harvest...
Until, ta da! The ideally shaped, shades of red, crisp apple is found.
And then, with satisfaction, more are discovered...
A time to gather...
Holding onto the treasures that have forever sweetly nourished us...
It's a delight to watch intrigue, anticipation, and discovery in action. Seeing enlightened expressions, big wondering eyes, and watching little bodies with oversized hoodies trample through the fields, on a hunt for God's simple creations.
These are the moments that renew my spirit and give my steps purpose.
Uncle Johnny's apples are all organically grown and so delicious!
These apple trees are all good and no evil. ;)
Before leaving, as part of our classic farm experience, the boys were able to feed some apples to the pigs and pet the farm C.A.T.
New skies, vast land, mountain backdrops, fresh nutrition on every tree and plant, anxious lil pigs, cowboy boots, adorable farm houses, classic barn cats: this is Colorado farms.
I don't know if my boys will ever work the land as a farmer, but I do know that we'll be back for another visit! And I'm grateful to the farmers of our America, who rise early, work hard, and make magic from our soil for all of our pleasure.
