We are in that brief lifestage in which our children are old enough and therefore don't require all of our energy but young enough to still find delight with the world so we can all just kickback and LOVE THE DAY. A little bird told me that this season of childhood passes too quickly, so I'm trying to soak up every second of the TODAYS.
Boys, Boys, Boys!
This description matches our summer almost exactly!
Chris makes the boys lots of wooden knives, swords, and shields.
And yes! It says mom on it.
The boys wrote that!
I guess it's just because I'm still
"cool like that"
to them. ;)
"What are little boys made of?
Snips and snails, and puppy dogs tails"
I would also like to interject a quick tip! My boys put instant holes into their brand new jeans and that makes me a SO unhappy Mama. I have set aside a couple of "outside playtime" outfits. These include cutoff jeans too. The boys are never allowed to go outside unless they change into their "outside playtime" clothes. This has greatly helped with keeping their new clothes NEW.
A series of lil Dreamy Summertime
escapades and moments:
Stateboard wheels rolling over concrete
Football with flipflops
Neighborhood garage poker matches
Splash time in mountain lakes
Long bike rides
Imaginary expeditions in the fields
Country Picnics
Backyard swinging
Colorado Campouts
Water, water
My days are full of sounds and dirt.
Not pictured are:
the piles of muddy clothes inside the laundry room door,
the beach towels thrown over our chairs,
sticky ice cream drippings on the back porch,
a neglected house in need of vacuuming,
bottles of sunscreen waiting to be put away,
BBQ tools in the sink that must be hand washed,
bikes with flat tires in need of repair,
and sandy footprints tracked inside.
Yes, it does all drive me crazy!
I begin to feel overwhelmed, burdened, and so behind on chores!
I want it all sparkly clean...I suppose I want it all.
But this is life, and we can't have it all.
So, we pick the adventures 9 times out of 10.
Someday maybe I can keep it all sparkly perfect as I prefer.
But for now, I will let it drive me crazy
and instead rollerblade outside with the boys
because I've been told some smart advice...
that this time with my sons won't last forever.
I've been whispered wisdom
to savor each moment...
and we do.

Beautiful post and great pictures. It looks like ya'll are having a great time. I try to tell myself that every day that I need to cherish these moments, because I know they go too fast.
Looking at those pictures made my eyes water and my mouth smile. I can't believe how fast our family is growing up. You are doing everything perfectly Lisa. I can not imagine a better life for three boys (How sad I can't call them little boys anymore). The zeal for life you have instilled in them is something they will carry forever. The smiles they wear may give way to the serious faces that can come with adult-hood. But their appreciation for the beauty God has placed all around us, the joy that comes from feeling deeply, will always be with them.
What a wonderful tribute to summer! It looks like it was a lot of great fun for your boys!! Imagine the good times we would miss out on if we were busy picking up towels and vacuuming?1
Enjoy the last little bit of summer we have, Lisa!!
XO,
Jane
Your photos made me sure smile!! Thanks
I smiled...and got a bit teary...as I read your post. You are so right...these special days with our boys go by in just a blink! Treasure each moment...each smile...each shout of laughter...and yes, each muddy footprint. They will still be there as the boys get older, it's just a bit different. You and Chris are wonderful parents...and you're raising some rather incredible sons. They will one day pass this legacy on to their sons (and daughters).
Even though our sons are grown men, they still come home and leave beach towels draped on chairs, bottles of water on the floors and tables, drip ice cream on the patio, and more. The laughter is still there...the camaraderie with the brothers is still there...the pushing dad into the pool game is still there...but then they all go to their respective homes (and we breathe sighs of relief and head for the couch!).
Hugs to you and your family...
Jane
I love how you share life with your boys. It seems that you make it fun for one another. The fort is terrific! BTW, thanks for the tips on the napkins. I've ordered them as a Christmas gift for my daughter who is attempting to teach her girls manners.
I love the "not pictured" list. Maybe that can be your next post ! :)
Now I want to play outside instead of going grocery shopping!
I love the poker picture! And the tent is amazing!
